Resident making strides two months into TVNH nursing rehab program
Renie Willemsma says she is 'getting stronger every day'

Trillium Villa Nursing Home resident Renie Willemsma has been making great gains since she started participating in the Sarnia long-term care community's nursing rehabilitation program July 15.
Renie moved to Trillium Villa on June 27 after suffering multiple falls. She was eager to regain her strength and balance through the nursing rehabilitation program and got to work almost immediately, says resident care co-ordinator Ashley Birch.
Her nursing rehab programs have included active range of motion (AROM) and transfers, which she completes daily in 30-minute sessions.
Working with the physiotherapy team, Renie is improving her gait and balance through exercises three times per week.
When Renie moved to Trillium Villa, she required a one-person extensive transfer. By Sept. 12, she was changed to a one-person limited transfer.
Her initial AROM goal was to increase strength in her arms and legs and be able to complete 10 repetitions of her exercises by her next review date.
She reached this goal and her new AROM goal is to increase range of motion to her arms and legs and be able to complete 11 repetitions using one-pound weights by her next review date.
She also uses an exercise peddler for five minutes every day, Ashley notes.
Renie's goal for her transfer program is to increase strength to her lower body and be able to complete 10 sit-to-stands by her next review date.
“She is consistently able to complete five sit-to-stands and is working towards completing 10 sit-to-stands,” Ashley tells S&R Today.
Since moving to Trillium Villa, Renie has had no more falls.
Asked what she thinks of her progress, Renie says, “(I love the) nursing rehab programs, and feel (I am) getting stronger every day.”
