Village on the Thames' new fun co-ordinator says her first two and a half months in the position have been “an amazing experience.”

Diamond Zelina started her new role July 2 and she says she has especially enjoyed building strong connections with residents of the Chatham-Kent seniors living community as well as organizing activities.

“I am really loving it,” she tells S&R Today. “Being the co-ordinator for the recreational department has been amazing.”

Diamond, who has her personal support worker (PSW) qualifications, has previous experience working in retirement living and long-term care and she also has management experience in restaurants and child care.

Asked what she's looking forward to most about her new position, Diamond says it's continuing to build relationships with the residents of Village on the Thames and encouraging them to participate in programming.

“Even (during) the last couple of months I have built that up a lot, but the longer I am here, the longer I can build with them,” she says.

“It's a really good experience when you start to see the residents connecting more with you and coming to activities and just coming to me in general – it's just building that connection with all of the residents.”

While Diamond says she has enjoyed overseeing many activities with residents, the one she says she has liked best is one called “mystery auction fun bags.”

During this program, bags are filled with items such as candy and lotions and residents place mock bids in order to get the bags.

“It's a really fun activity and I get a lot of residents participating; they love the bags and it's a treat for them and there is always a great turnout,” she says.
