Westmount Gardens residents had a busy summer packed with exciting outings – some were tried and proven favourites while others were new experiences.

Adnan Resh, the London, Ont. long-term care community's life enrichment manager, says that while team members wanted to provide excursions that have long been popular with residents, they also wanted to expand their outing experiences.

This involved the team “thinking outside of the box” to come up with new ideas, he adds.

One new outing was to the Mistyglen Creamery in Belmont, Ont., where residents toured the creamery's dairy farm and got to see how cheese curds are made.

Residents and team members enjoyed this experience, Adnan says.

“That was a great outing,” he tells S&R Today.

Another “different” outing this summer was to Museum London. Adnan says residents “loved” seeing the exhibits at the museum, which combines exhibits focusing on art and history.

“Residents had a blast,” he says, adding everyone had lunch in the museum's lobby before embarking on the tour which was split between two guides and two groups of residents.

And, of course, there were returns this summer to favourite outings. Residents asked for a trip to Gateway Casinos, which team members granted.

Residents and team members also went on Westmount Gardens' annual outing to Port Stanley to have lunch on the beach.

As always, lunch was at Mackie's, on the shores of Lake Erie, a spot renowned for its fish and chips, hamburgers, hot dogs and famous orangeade.

Adnan says trips to Mackie's always spark lots of reminiscing for residents.

“Mackie's is always a loved trip as it brings back memories of being at a cottage or by the water enjoying a meal and people-watching,” he says.
