The Waterloo Concert Band performed for Waterloo Heights residents and team members recently, providing both an evening of entertainment and enhancing a valuable community bond.

For its most recent performance at the the Waterloo, Ont. seniors living community, the band performed on the back patio to a full audience.

Waterloo Heights activity director Jacqui Metzloff notes that Waterloo Heights and the band have a strong relationship that's a benefit to residents.

The band, she adds, used to play every Christmas season inside Waterloo Heights. But as the band's membership grew, it became challenging to fit everyone inside with their instruments. And with more members and more instruments, it was hard to get the right acoustics.

So, last summer Jacqui suggested the band start performing outside on the back patio. This allowed for the needed acoustics and ensured the band could keep performing at Waterloo Heights, much to residents' delight.

“The residents still wanted to hear the band play; it worked really well, so we did it again this year,” Jacqui says.

Residents had the options of attending the performance from inside the activity room, from outside on the patio, or from their balconies.

After the show, residents enjoyed social time with the band over punch and fresh-baked cookies, Jacqui says, adding the performance could not have happened at a better time.

“It was the perfect time of year to do it, as our flowers were in full bloom and the temperature was just right,” she says.

The Waterloo Concert Band is a nonprofit musical organization with about 50 members. The band, which traces its origins to 1858, plays about two dozen performances every year, according to its website.
