Heron Terrace now has a gazebo for residents to go to for outdoor socializing as well as to relax and enjoy the splendour of the Windsor, Ont. long-term care community's garden.
The project was recently completed, thanks to collaboration from Heron Terrace's residents, families and team members.
“The collaborative family council and residents' council meetings, (along with) planning and fundraising, made this beautiful gazebo project possible this year,” Heron Terrace life enrichment manager Sheila Dela Pena-Romero tells S&R Today.
The cost of building the gazebo was paid for with donations from the Heron Terrace family council. The idea was to create a covered outdoor space for residents to go to after enjoying walks and to spend time socializing, Sheila notes.
Additionally, one of the family members, Theresa, donated two large pots of flowers that are now sitting on both sides of the gazebo.
Theresa plans to add more flowers and a birdhouse for residents like her mother who enjoy bird watching, Sheila says.
Sheila says the gazebo and its flowers sparked a new hobby for Theresa and her mom.
“She comes every day to visit her mom and water the plants as well,” Sheila says.
“She said she enjoys (watering the flowers) with her mom and that it feels great seeing other residents and family members enjoying the shade and fresh air after their long walk or roll around the home.”
