Not only did the annual Waterloo Heights strawberry social serve up a wide array of delicious desserts made with fresh strawberries, it raised money for a charity, supported local business and brought the community together.

Before the June 25 event, team members from the Waterloo, Ont. seniors living community sent out invitations to residents, families, friends and people from the neighbourhood for an afternoon of strawberry-themed desserts, live music and fun.

“We had a full house,” Waterloo Heights activity director Jacqui Metzloff tells S&R Today. “We run this event every year and it's always a success.”

Through the sale of tickets for 50-50 draws, door prizes and admission (for community members only), Waterloo Heights collected nearly $600 for the Lisaard & Innisfree Hospice, the charity residents chose to raise funds for throughout 2024.

“We listened to live music and enjoyed fizzy strawberry punch along with strawberry treats including chocolate-covered strawberries, strawberry wafers, strawberry drop cookies and strawberry cheesecake,” Jacqui says, adding the berries, as always, were bought from Herrle's Country Farm Market, a local supplier.

“It's a good way to support local business,” she says of the social.

Jacqui says people from Waterloo Heights' resident waiting list were also sent invitations along with a packet of strawberry seeds.

She notes Waterloo Heights' volunteers once again helped make the strawberry social a success.

“I want to give a huge thank-you to our volunteers that day who helped scramble to make sure everyone had lots of treats and comfy seats,” Jacqui says. “They really worked hard during the event.”
