Heron Terrace residents, family members and staff recently honoured Philippines Independence Day with a feast that included many of the southeast Asian country's most celebrated meals.
There are many team members at the Windsor, Ont. long-term care community who are of Filipino heritage, so it was fitting to celebrate “Araw ng Kalayaan” – which translates to “Day of Freedom” – on June 12 with a large variety of meals they prepared for everyone.
“This is a once-a-year celebration that most staff was waiting for because of their delicious and popular cuisines, such as pancit (a noodle dish), spring rolls, barbecued pork, chicken adobo (a stew), chicken macaroni salad, mango tapioca with jelly, and other special delicacies and desserts,” says Heron Terrace life enrichment manager Sheila Dela Pena-Romero.
Sheila says there was a large turnout of residents and team members who came to enjoy the delicious food. The event also served as a fundraiser for Heron Terrace's residents' council.
Money raised from the event will help fund events, such as live music, outings and other programs that benefit residents.
“Many staff, residents and family members came out to support and enjoy this patriotic event,” Sheila says. “Even our kitchen chefs came out and gave compliments to all who prepared and cooked the meal.”
Due to its popularity with residents, their families and team members, Philippines Independence Day is celebrated each year at Heron Terrace.
“Residents and family members are looking forward to continuing this event every year and wishing to see more (celebrations of) other nations' cultural events as well,” Sheila says.
