Volunteering is very much a part of Lynn Pollock's life, and she doesn't have to travel far to lend a hand to the seniors living community's residents and team members – she lives in one of the building's suites.
For the past year, Lynn has been one of the most frequent volunteers at Waterloo Heights, and she brings a wealth of volunteering experience to the table, says activity director Jacqui Metzloff.
Aside from the time she spends at Waterloo Heights, Lynn has volunteered with Food4Kids Waterloo Region, Nutrition for Learning, Brownies, Scouts, Ray of Hope and a high school council.
She also volunteers at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex's Community Pavilion once a week, making lunches for the seniors' day program.
“Lynn was eager to help us out at Waterloo Heights and we are so glad she joined the team,” Jacqui tells S&R Today.
Lynn was a nurse for 51 years, mostly working as a rehab case manager, so helping others comes naturally for her, Jacqui says.
“She has always liked helping others, and now that she lives alone she enjoys the opportunity to meet people,” Jacqui says.
Most of Lynn's volunteer work at Waterloo Heights is with the activities department, and she especially likes helping with themed events, she adds.
“She loves how everyone gets really involved with dressing up, singing, or doing something unique for the event,” Jacqui says.
Lynn also enjoys interacting with residents and building friendships with them. She attends the community fitness class that's held at Waterloo Heights on Mondays and Fridays, so volunteering is a way for her to get to know those in her class better, Jacqui adds.
As a volunteer, Lynn has been “a life saver” at Waterloo Heights, Jacqui says.
“It's so nice having a volunteer who lives in the building, and Lynn has stepped in for last minute situations and cancellations,” she says.
