Creative food services team brings Halloween fun to residents' meals

Afton Park Place residents enjoy lunch and dinner with a special Halloween twist

Afton Park Place residents enjoyed Halloween treats this year that went beyond the usual chocolate and candy.

In fact, much of the Oct. 31 meal planning for lunch and dinner centred on “scary” meals that went along with the spirit of the occasion, thanks to the Sarnia long-term care community's creative food services team.

Led by food services manager Pauline Charlton, team members Julie, Alina, Tracey and Jacob brought Halloween spirit into the kitchen to prepare the food items they were going to serve that day – and all had a Halloween theme.

Gummy worms on cocktail spears garnished bloody marys, hard-boiled eggs were turned into eyeballs, and deli meats and cheeses were cut into a variety of Halloween cats. Spider doughnuts were created using Oreo cookies and candied eyes with black icing.

Chef Laura prepared two unique and fun supper options: spider hot dogs on a hill of macaroni and cheese and jack-o-lantern burgers.

Orange Rice Krispies pumpkin squares were served for dessert.

Pauline is commending everyone on the food services team for their dedication to residents and for their creative flair which helped make this past Halloween's meals memorable.

“The dietary department enjoys working together and preparing themed foods for the residents on holidays,” she tells S&R Today.

“I even overheard them chatting about ideas for residents' meals for next year's Halloween.”
