A group of cycling enthusiasts is helping the residents of two senior living communities see Sarnia in a new way.

Cycling Without Age is run by a group of volunteer cyclists who have been taking residents from Landmark Village and Twin Lakes Village on rides around town in trishaws.

Trishaws are three-wheeled, electrically-assisted bikes that are peddled by a “pilot” and are equipped with a two-seat carriage at the front.

“The bikes are amazing because they have a canopy that covers, if raining, and a warm blanket that attaches and tucks riders in if it's a bit chilly,” explains Brent Hart, Landmark Village's fun co-ordinator.

“The residents have a great time.”

Cycling Without Age volunteers show up at Landmark Village on Friday mornings; on Mondays mornings they pick up Twin Lakes Village residents.

Both Landmark and Twin Lakes plan to continue running the program while the weather is warm enough, hopefully until Thanksgiving.

With two time slots each day at both villages, up to eight residents can enjoy a ride at each home – and there's always a full turnout.

“Residents have been enjoying it and can't wait for the next Monday,” says Twin Lakes Village fun co-ordinator Gina McNally.

“We cannot thank the volunteers who take our residents out for a bike ride enough. They bring so much joy to our residents for the hard work that they do.”

These excursions have even brought about some suggestions from residents to make the rides better, Brent notes.

One resident came up with the idea of doing rides along the St. Clair River, so Brent says he’s going to look into seeing if this can be arranged.

“Instead of the bikes meeting us at Landmark, we could have our shuttle take riders down to the waterfront and the bikes could meet us there,” he says.
