The residents of Westmount Gardens had a memorable summer that was marked by a variety of exciting excursions to favourite spots around southwestern Ontario.

In June, residents and team members from the London, Ont. long-term care community spent a morning strolling around nearby Springbank Park amidst what life enrichment manager Adnan Resh describes as “perfect” weather.

“Every resident had fun and there were tons of compliments,” Adnan tells S&R Today.

“A resident said she hadn't been to Springbank Park for over 20 years and this was all so exciting, and she loved every minute.”

Residents enjoyed watching cyclists, runners and walkers go by, and there were many dog visits as well, Adnan adds.

In early July, residents and team members went on a country drive and made a stop for ice cream, which everyone enjoyed. In the mid-July, residents took their first lunch outing in more than years, which Adnan says was “extra exciting.”

And what better way to celebrate this other than having lunch on a beach?

The lunch outing was to Port Stanley and the restaurant they popped into was at the well-known and popular Mackie's, on the shores of Lake Erie.

“This was definitely a well-deserved outing we all have been waiting for and there was just so much excitement,” Adnan says.

Residents got to enjoy some of their favourite snacks, including fish and chips, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, fries and Mackie's famous orangeade.

The lunch outing was topped off with a walk on the beach, which has a wheelchair-accessible walkway on the sand and all residents had a chance to get close to the water.

Afterwards, everyone sat on the benches and people-watched.

“One of the residents said, 'leave me here, I want to vacation here for the summer,' ” Adnan says.

“Another resident said, 'this was a perfect trip,' adding she was so happy she didn't miss out on it.”

Adnan attributes the high resident participation these events garnered to everyone missing outings during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have been going full force with outings here at the home since restrictions have been lifted and we have been taking advantage of the outings, since it has been a rough couple years,” he says.
