Heron Terrace celebrates Philippines Independence Day

Food and fun helped the residents and team members of Heron Terrace celebrate Philippines Independence Day in June.
Celebrated every June 12, Philippines Independence Day marks the anniversary of the southeast Asian country's declaration of independence from the United States in 1898.
Heron Terrace has a diverse population of team members and many staff members are Filipino. The Windsor, Ont. long-term care community's celebration of the day was an opportunity for these team members to share their culture and traditions with everyone, says life enrichment manager Sheila Dela Pena-Romero.
Every month, Heron Terrace strives to promote and celebrate diversity and inclusivity by organizing events and activities with cultural themes, so it was fitting Philippines Independence Day was celebrated in June, Sheila adds.
“These events provide the chance for team members to participate in activities that help them learn about other cultures,” she tells S&R Today.
In preparation of the day, the life enrichment team decorated the activity room and prepared fun games with karaoke machines for residents, family members and staff to enjoy.
And, of course, a party wouldn't be complete without team members sharing some of their favourite foods from the Philippines, the highlights being lumpia (spring rolls) and pancit (thin noodles).
“Everyone was looking forward to this,” Sheila says. “Residents expressed their gratitude to us for hosting this kind of event for them to explore and recognize other countries' cultures and traditions.”
