During the Steeves & Rozema Group's annual Quest for Success awards night in April, Linda Paquette admits she got a little teary-eyed when she was called to the podium to accept a 20-year service award from her managers Brenda Fraser and Lisa Smith.
She says it was hard not to get emotional for being honoured for doing work she loves.
“It's pretty awesome working at the same place for 20 years, and it's great to have your hard work acknowledged,” says Linda, who has been building manager at Kenwick Place in Sarnia for 17 of those years.
Linda joined Steeves & Rozema in 2002. At the time, she was living near Afton Park Place, an S&R long-term care community, and applied for a position. While there were no vacancies for the position she was looking for at Afton Park, Linda was hired for a cleaning position at S&R.
She eventually ended up working at head office, where her hard work was noticed by her manager, Clarke Boddy, who's now S&R's vice-president of senior living.
“Clarke, my manager at the time, asked if I knew where the internal job postings were and to keep an eye out because he thought I would be a good fit for an upcoming posting,” Linda recalls.
“Because he told me he thought I'd be a really good building manager, I ended up at the Kenwick.”
Even though Linda had no previous experience as a building manager, she says Clarke had faith that she was the right person for the job. She's been the Kenwick Place building manager ever since.
As part of her job, Linda and her team tend to the needs of the people living in the 243-unit apartment block, show prospective tenants apartments and sign leases.
The daily variety is one of the aspects of her job Linda says she likes best.
“I like working (at Kenwick Place) because every day is different,” she says. “We have some tenants who have been there for 40-something years, and it's nice that we get to connect with them.”
