Waterloo Heights residents and team members were recently treated to an engaging presentation from the founder of a local company that's working to reduce environmental footprints – and when it was over, the Waterloo, Ont. seniors living community had become part of the solution.

The presentation was led by Bruce Taylor, the founder of Enviro-Stewards. The company, which he founded in 2000, is based in nearby Elmira, Ont., and strives to improve water and energy conservation as well as prevent pollution and promote sustainable communities.

Bruce is also the son of resident Marg Taylor, so there was a personal connection between Waterloo Heights and Bruce, notes Jacqui Reid, the home's activity co-ordinator.

To help support the work Bruce and Enviro-Stewards are doing, Waterloo Heights purchased two filter sponsorships from the company as an honorarium for the presentation.

Each filter unit Waterloo Heights sponsored will provide 20 cubic metres of clean drinking water per year to two families in northern Uganda.

Jacqui says residents and the Waterloo Heights team are proud to spread the Steeves & Rozema Group's mission of “creating communities that are good for life” to another continent.

“We feel very strongly about doing everything we can to help the environment, and this is a unique way to do it,” she tells S&R Today.

“Residents and staff are happy to have this opportunity to help the families. The opportunity likely would not have presented itself if it weren't for Bruce and his company.”
