Two Steeves & Rozema Group senior living communities organized events June 15 in recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).
Both Landmark Village and the Village on the Thames make a point of hosting events and showing support for WEAAD each year, and this year was no exception.
At Landmark Village, residents and team members at the Sarnia seniors living community wore purple, the official colour of WEAAD, and were supplied with elder abuse awareness information about the signs of elder abuse and ways to prevent it.
Landmark Village also donated cookies to support an information day the Sarnia-Lambton Elder Abuse Network (SLEAN) was hosting in a local church, which Landmark fun co-ordinator Brent Hart says “was very much appreciated.”
“Originally, we had planned a picnic for the afternoon; however, there was a heat advisory, so we treated all the residents to a refreshing Popsicle to keep everyone cool inside,” he tells S&R Today.
“We plan to do even more next year for WEAAD.”
Team members at Village on the Thames in Chatham-Kent also encouraged residents and colleagues to wear purple on June 15. Posters were put up in the hallways to advertise the day.
“We got a good turnout for the day,” says fun co-ordinator Tina Drew.
Tina adds that she overheard a few residents talking with each other about where they could find purple clothing to put on for WEAAD, which, she says, was encouraging.
“It was nice for them to participate,” she says.
The United Nations has designated June 15 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day to draw global attention to the physical, emotional and financial mistreatment of elders and to generate discussion on how to promote dignity and respect of older adults.
