Asian-themed meal presents Trillium Villa residents with a tough choice

The chicken teriyaki and sweet-and-sour pork both looked so delicious residents couldn’t decide which one they wanted

The Trillium Villa food services team recently created an Asian-themed meal featuring two menu options that were so delicious a problem was created for residents: they didn’t know which one they wanted for dinner.

The meal was the brainchild of food service manager Brandy Charlton and head cook Gerard Pruliere who used their creative culinary talents to prepare a myriad of recipes that touched on the cuisines of Japan, China and Thailand.

Residents could have either chicken teriyaki with stir-fried Thai vegetables, warm chow mein noodles and a crispy spring roll, followed by a creamy cheesecake with a homemade mango topping for dessert; or sweet-and-sour pork ribs, chicken fried rice, green beans with red peppers, an egg roll and Mandarin oranges.

The residents uniformly ate everything on their plates and were offered fortune cookies after the meal.

“The residents found it very difficult to choose between the two choices,” Brandy tells S&R Today, adding a popular comment from residents was, “I didn’t know which one to pick (from the show plates); they all looked good.”

Each month Trillium Villa residents meet with Brandy to discuss menu ideas, their favourite foods, recipes and new ideas for themed meals. This helps the food services team at the Sarnia long-term care community keep meal quality high for residents, Brandy says.

Brandy says she and the food services team plan to continue to create “magical and fun themed meals” for the residents to enjoy.

She adds that as much as the residents love the food, the food services team enjoys making them happy.

“The cooks love to join in the creativity and really feel proud when the residents enjoy the meals,” Brandy says.
