Life enrichment manager Sara Byma is commending the St. Andrew’s Terrace life enrichment team for designating outdoor programming every day to ensure residents of the Cambridge, Ont. long-term care community are getting plenty of fresh air while participating in meaningful activities.
“I am so proud of the life enrichment team,” Sara tells S&R Today. “They have designated time each and every day – seven days a week – for outdoor time with residents. We have done this (throughout) May, June, July, August, and we will do all September as well.”
Residents have been participating in an array of outdoor activities for the past four months.
Gardening has been a popular program for residents, Sara says, adding the vegetable garden has been “thriving” with produce, including tomatoes, squash, kale, lettuce, eggplant, rosemary, basil and peppers.
There is also a fruit garden residents have been working on, and there are now strawberries, blueberries and currants growing at St. Andrew’s Terrace. There is also a plum tree which is growing three varieties of plums.
Resident Ben Andrade has been working hard over spring and summer to keep the courtyards in tip-top shape, Sara notes.
Outdoor activities are provided at different times each day, and programming is largely dependent on the weather, Sara says, adding team members will schedule activities before it gets too warm outside.
Aside from working in the gardens, residents enjoy playing games or participating in singalongs with the two music therapists who are on the life enrichment team.
Residents are also kept hydrated with treats like Popsicles and lemonade.
Most importantly, having meaningful outdoor activities every day has been a big hit with residents, Sara says.
“We believe in the importance of assisting our residents outdoors and have made it a priority all season,” she says. “It has been so well received.”
