Westmount Gardens says goodbye to classic car that sat in the courtyard for 19 years

While the 1961 Cadillac Coupe de Ville is gone, it has found a new home where it will be restored

For 19 years, a cherry-red 1961 Cadillac Coupe de Ville sat in the Westmount Gardens courtyard and served as the centrepiece in the garden.

The car came to the home when it was still known as Longworth Long Term Care. It was brought on site to help residents – particularly the gentlemen living at the London, Ont. long-term care community – reminisce and to wash and polish.

Recently, the decision was made to remove the car and revamp the garden.

Deb Lines, the life enrichment manager at Westmount Gardens, says that while the car was a great conversation piece, everyone felt the time had come to give it a new home.

The owner of That Metal Guy Recycling, Tony Laviolette, offered to have the car removed. He and his daughter are now planning to fully restore the vehicle, so the Coupe de Ville has found a loving home, Deb says.

“The garden courtyards have received a huge make over, and the removal of the car was very timely,” she tells S&R Today.

“The pergola the car used to sit under has been power washed and will now be the home for a shaded seating area.”

And what a project it was to remove the vehicle.

That Metal Guy Recycling covered the expenses for the project, which required the largest type of crane available to lift the car out of the central courtyard, hoist it many metres over one section of Westmount Gardens and safely bring it back to the outside of the home.

The project proved to be fascinating for everyone living at and near Westmount Gardens, Deb says.

“Residents, staff and neighbours watched with amazement as the crane ... hoisted the car out of the courtyard and over the building to a flatbed truck,” she says.
