Nhi Chieu worked as head chef at Heron Terrace from 2013 until 2015, when he left to open his own restaurant, but his heart stayed close to residents and his colleagues at the Windsor, Ont. long-term care community.
Recently, Nhi, who owns and operates Tai Yan Palace, a local Chinese restaurant, reached out to the Heron Terrace team and offered to cook a special meal for residents and staff members.
Nhi knew the home had been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. As soon as he was able to, he wanted to do something special for everyone to show his support for residents and staff.
“He donated his time and all the ingredients to make our residents and staff an authentic Chinese dinner,” Heron Terrace food services manager Annette Deane tells S&R Today.
“He still has a real connection (to Heron Terrace residents and staff), so he contacted me and asked if he could do something special.”
Nhi prepared a meal for everyone that included chicken chow mein, rice and spring rolls.
Annette says Nhi’s kind gesture and the delicious meal he prepared was well received by Heron Terrace residents and team members.
“Everyone loved it; they absolutely loved it,” she says.
