St. Andrew’s Terrace celebrates warmer weather with tiki bar

Team members convert coffee kiosk to a tiki bar to serve tropical drinks

With warmer weather now here, St. Andrew’s Terrace residents have been treated to tropical drinks from the Cambridge, Ont. long-term care community’s first-ever travelling tiki bar.

The tiki bar is also the home’s Tim Hortons coffee kiosk, which was built by a team member earlier this spring (see April 21 story).

Team members temporarily converted the Tim Hortons kiosk by adding a large “Tiki Bar” sign and decorating it with tropical motifs, including tiki masks and a beach poster.

Residents were served pina coladas and strawberry daiquiris. The beverages went over well with everyone, says life enrichment manager Sara Byma.

“The residents loved it,” she tells S&R Today.

With St. Andrew’s Terrace still required to adhere to social distancing protocols and only host small programs to keep everyone safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, the travelling tiki bar is the perfect tool, Sara says.

Team members even brought the tiki cart outdoors for residents who were spending time in the courtyards.

For an added touch of authenticity, team members played Caribbean-style steel drum music.

“(It was) a great day at St. Andrew’s,” Sara says.
