Just Baskits & Balloon Decor has delivered Balloon Buddies – clusters of colourful balloons shaped like people and embossed with smiley faces – to every resident living in seven of Steeves & Rozema’s eight Sarnia long-term care and seniors living communities since January.
There are now 51 Balloon Buddies waiting to be adopted for Afton Park Place residents, and any individual or local business that would like to put a big smile on a seniors’ face can sponsor a Balloon Buddy adoption.
Just Baskits & Balloon Decor is part of a nationwide campaign called Adopt-A-Grandparent. The boutique’s owner, Sherri Rankin, is part of a network of more than 8,000 balloon artists worldwide who are creating balloon sculptures for seniors to help spread some cheer during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sherri is committed to providing every long-term care and retirement community resident in Sarnia and the surrounding area with a Balloon Buddy.
A lot of work goes into creating each Balloon Buddy. To date, Just Baskits & Balloon Decor has made more than 800 Balloon Buddies for seniors across the Sarnia area.
Sherri says people in the Sarnia area have been supportive of the Adopt-A-Grandparent project. The Balloon Buddies are sent to seniors with greeting cards purchased from a local manufacturer. Business sponsors have their company information included on the cards with a label Sherri makes.
Individuals or businesses that would like to be a sponsor can adopt a Balloon Buddy for $15 each or four for $50.
“The community has been absolutely amazing,” Sherri tells S&R Today. “We have had residents call in – some were crying on the phone – and thanking us for doing this, and that really made our day.”
Rosewood Village is one of the S&R communities in Sarnia to receive Balloon Buddies. The balloon sculptures were a big hit with residents, says Rosewood Village executive director Jenica Tanguay.
“Balloon Buddies (made for) an incredible occasion at Rosewood,” she told S&R Today in January. “The Balloon Buddies brought much happiness and smiles throughout the building to all residents and staff.”
