Resident Armand Comeau and team member Laura McHenry were among those who received the Moderna vaccine at Afton Park on Feb. 9.

Afton Park Place residents and some team members received the first dose of the Moderna vaccine on Feb. 9 to help protect them against the COVID-19 virus.

On Feb. 9, paramedics from Lambton Public Health were at the Sarnia long-term care community to vaccinate 116 residents.

After the residents received their immunizations, there were doses left over which could be used to vaccinate front-line staff, so the team held a draw to select 10 staff members to receive the vaccine.

The Moderna vaccine requires a booster, and paramedics will be returning in early March to administer the second dose.

All residents who received the vaccination provided the necessary consent to be immunized. Team members also took time to explain to each resident the vaccination process and why it was important, says Stacy Petrie, the life enrichment manager at Afton Park Place.

“It went very smooth,” she says of the vaccination process.

As an extra measure of safety, Afton Park Place is starting rapid testing for COVID-19, which means the home is shifting from tests conducted once per week to twice per week, Stacy adds.

The Government of Ontario says on its website that vaccinations will be crucial to curbing COVID-19 infection.

“(Vaccines) will be an important tool to help stop the spread of the virus and allow individuals, families and workers to safely resume normal life,” the website states.

“The coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine does not cause a coronavirus infection. It helps to build up your immunity to the virus, so your body will fight it off more easily if it affects you.”
