Although a birthday party was not possible, Mary St. Cyr was still provided with a memorable day

Lanark Heights resident Mary St. Cyr enjoys some ice cream on her 103rd birthday.

Lanark Heights resident Mary St. Cyr turned 103 on Oct. 9, and team members at the Kitchener, Ont. long-term care community made sure she had a special day to remember.

Normally, the team would have organized a birthday celebration for Mary; however, this was not possible because of restrictions in place due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, says life enrichment manager Melissa Abdul.

But Melissa and the Lanark Heights team still managed to make a big deal of the day for Mary.

One of Mary’s favourite activities is doing laps around the hallways in her wheelchair. Knowing this, Melissa attached a large balloon to Mary’s wheelchair that read “Happy Birthday” so everyone would know she was the birthday girl.

“No matter where she went in her neighbourhood, everyone knew it was her birthday,” Melissa tells S&R Today, adding Mary did many laps that day.

“She has a lot of energy,” Melissa says.

Melissa asked Mary what she liked – cake or ice cream – and Mary told her ice cream, so the team gave her an ice-cream cone and sang Happy Birthday to her.

Melissa says Mary has many friends among residents at Lanark Heights, and she received birthday best wishes throughout the day.

“We made her feel special every time we saw her,” Melissa says.
