Lanark Heights celebrates residents’ council and grandparents with food-filled week

Each day residents were treated to a special surprise from the travelling food cart

From Sept. 14 to Sept. 18, the folks at Lanark Heights combined Residents’ Council Week with Grandparents Week to create five fun-and-food-filled days that celebrated residents and provided an array of tasty treats for them to enjoy each day.

Due to limits on programming as well as social distancing measures in place to help keep everyone safe during the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Kitchener, Ont. long-term care community’s life enrichment team used a travelling cart each day to deliver special surprises to residents in honour of Residents’ Council Week and Grandparents Week.

The food and beverages served included:

Monday: Homemade cookies and milk
Tuesday: Homemade bread with apple butter
Wednesday: Strawberry-rhubarb pie (which was also served during a socially-distanced residents’ council meeting)
Thursday: Apple cider
Friday: Apple fritters from Anna Mae’s Bakery and Restaurant

During the week – and any other time team members push the travelling snack carts through the home – residents were excited because something new always awaited them, says Lanark Heights acting life enrichment manager Melissa Abdul.

“They were excited and knew something delicious was coming their way,” she says. “A resident commented, ‘yummy in my tummy’ after scrapping the last of the strawberry rhubarb pie from her plate.”
