Lanark Heights residents and team members celebrated the end of summer recently with a carnival-themed day that brought a festival-like atmosphere to the Kitchener, Ont. long-term care community.
Carnival Day was also an opportunity for everyone to reminisce about the festivals and fairs they’ve attended, and this was in part triggered by the mobile carts that went around offering residents some favourite carnival snacks, including mini corn dogs, ice cream and candy floss.
“Residents enjoyed the programming and enjoyed having the snacks, as it has been a while since (they’ve had) cotton candy and corn dogs,” says Melissa Abdul, Lanark Heights’ interim life enrichment manager.
And, of course, no carnival would be complete without a variety of midway games.
The Lanark Heights life enrichment team hosted ring-toss games, badminton and a beach-ball toss that saw residents receive prizes that included teddy bears, chocolates and potato chips.
Melissa notes Carnival Day was also an opportunity to celebrate the hard work team members put forth to keep everyone safe during summer amid the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic.
To add a little more fun to the event, red noses were handed out to residents and team members, which garnered lots of laughs.
“This instantly brought smiles and laughter first thing in the morning to our residents, seeing the team members dressed up carnival-themed and with a (red) nose,” Melissa says.
