Lanark Heights team members are commending the efforts of a group of resident care aides (RCAs) who have worked at the Kitchener long-term care community during the global COVID-19 pandemic.

RCAs have been hired by many long-term care communities during the pandemic to help with tasks to reduce the workload on staff members.

Melissa Abdul, Lanark Heights’ interim life enrichment manager, says the RCAs who worked at the home were “an amazing asset” to team members across the board.

“We are tremendously thankful for all they did for the residents,” she adds.

Lanark Heights, like Steeves & Rozema’s other long-term care communities, is closed to all but essential visitors and group programming has been put on hold to keep residents and team members safe during the pandemic.

During their time at Lanark Heights, RCAs provided support during mealtime services, which Melissa says was a “huge help” because residents have been staying in their rooms to keep safe.

RCAs also provided one-to-one programming with residents and helped organize video calls between residents and their loved ones.

When residents wanted to have safe patio visits or spend time outside, RCAs were there to assist them, Melissa says.

“RCAs, overall, were very supportive to the entire home, and we are so forever grateful for the support,” she says.
