Family members treat the Waterloo Heights team to a pizza lunch

‘It was the nicest surprise and we felt so appreciated’

The Waterloo Heights team was on the receiving end of a family’s kindness and generosity recently when 12 pizzas were delivered to the Waterloo, Ont. seniors living community to thank everyone for their hard work and the care they’re providing residents during the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic.

The pizzas were provided to the team at lunchtime on May 4 courtesy of James and Cheri Mitchell, the son and daughter-in-law of residents John and Elaine Mitchell.

James and Cheri also requested all team members come to the foyer so the couple could thank them from the outside of the building.

“The whole family showed up – they even had family in from Toronto – and they held up big signs and thanked us,” Waterloo Heights resident services manager Maia McMurran tells S&R Today.

During their family’s visit, John and Elaine came out to their balcony to wave to everyone from above, Maia adds.

“They made us feel really special,” she says of James and Cherie. “Then Domino’s showed up with the pizzas, and it was so lovely. It was the nicest surprise and we felt so appreciated.”

Steeves & Rozema long-term care and seniors living communities are following important protocols to keep residents and team members safe during the global COVID-19 pandemic.

As part of these protocols, only “essential visitors” (who must be screened on site) are allowed entry to the homes.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic was declared by the World Health Organization in March, Maia says everyone working at Waterloo Heights has worked hard to keep residents and their co-workers safe, so the gesture from James and Cherie was much appreciated.

“The whole team here at Waterloo Heights has been doing such an amazing job,” she says. “Everyone has stepped up to the plate.”
