‘We had a lot of shoppers and a lot of fun’

Waterloo Heights residents are pictured here at a table filled with cookies they baked to sell at their Nov. 30 Christmas bazaar.

Activity co-director Jacqui Reid says the annual Christmas bazaar held at Waterloo Heights on Nov. 30 was a “huge success,” with the Waterloo, Ont. seniors-living apartment block raising $535 in support of the Parkinson Society of Southwestern Ontario through the event.

Every year the Waterloo Heights residents’ council votes on a charity to support through fundraising events during the 12-month period. In 2019 the council chose to support the Parkinson Society of Southwestern Ontario.

Jacqui notes this year’s Christmas bazaar raised more than last year’s event. The 2018 bazaar raised $481.85 for the Alzheimer Society of Waterloo Wellington, the charity residents chose to support last year.

Once again, outside vendors came to Waterloo Heights to sell their wares – which included everything from homemade crafts and jewelry to baked goods and knitting – during the bazaar.

“It was a busy day,” Jacqui says of the bazaar, which was attended by residents, their families and the public. “We had a lot of shoppers and a lot of fun.”

Prior to the event, residents worked hard to bake, decorate and plate cookies for the residents’ bake sale, and many resident volunteers helped sell these goodies, Jacqui says.

The entire $535 in proceeds raised from the bazaar will be donated to the Parkinson Society. The Waterloo Heights residents’ council will vote next year to support another charity in 2020.
