Residents at the Village on the Thames were treated to their last big summer outing Sept. 17 when a group from the seniors living community enjoyed a picnic lunch at Kingston Park in Chatham-Kent that included chicken from KFC.
Every year the Village on the Thames says goodbye to summer with a “KFC picnic” complete with entertainment. This year music was provided by entertainer Glenn Smith.
Residents also enjoy walking around the park’s paths and enjoying the fresh air and scenery, says Village on the Thames fun co-ordinator Tina Drew.
The event lasts for about two and a half hours, which Tina says is ideal for residents because they get to enjoy a picnic and take in everything the park offers without the outing consuming the entire day.
“We pick up the chicken, and the residents just come and eat and have a good time,” Tina says.
The KFC picnic is a tradition that goes back several years at the Village on the Thames. It started one year with residents requesting a picnic lunch with chicken from KFC and it has become a favourite late-summer event since, Tina says.
But it’s not just the promise of fried chicken that gets residents excited about the annual event, she adds.
“They love the music and just getting out,” Tina says.
