About 12 residents participated in a Paint Nite at Heron Terrace on July 9.

About 12 Heron Terrace residents tapped into their creative talents July 9 when they participated in the Windsor long-term care community’s first Paint Nite.

Life enrichment worker Connie Poisson says team members proposed having a Paint Nite at Heron Terrace a few months ago and asked residents if they would be interested in attending. Many said they were, so team members advertised the event on posters around Heron Terrace, which brought even more interest.

Paint Nite events are led by artists trained to teach others. The lead artist decides on a theme that everyone will paint. They will then walk the group step by step through the process of creating a piece of artwork. The Heron Terrace Paint Nite was led by an artist Connie knows.

Residents were tasked to paint a lilac branch coming out from the side of their canvas. Connie says this theme was decided on because it posed a high probability of success for residents participating but was also a visually attractive design.

“Most of the residents were very happy with what they had painted,” Connie says. “Some may have been a little hard on themselves, but in the end I think they were all pleased.”

An added bonus from the event was that several residents’ family members stopped by to watch their loved ones paint, Connie adds.

Connie says one touching moment from the event was when a resident, who has limited abilities, did some painting on her own and then worked with her granddaughter to complete her project.

“That was really phenomenal,” Connie says.

Given the event’s success, Connie and life enrichment manager Lori George say the life enrichment team is considering hosting another Paint Nite at some point.

“We wouldn’t do it every month because we want to keep this as a special event, but we have been talking doing it quarterly to go with every season,” Lori says.
