The Lanark Heights Thunder Bowlts, pictured above, raised $1,390 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Waterloo Region during bowling fundraiser.

Sherri Anger knows the value the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Waterloo Region brings to the community. For four years she has been a Big Sister to a young girl.

And for the fourth year, Sherri and a group of her co-workers from Lanark Heights participated in the Big Brothers Big Sisters’ annual Bowl for Kids Sake fundraiser at the Kingpin Bowlounge at Bingemans in Kitchener.

Sherri, the assistant manager of resident care at the Kitchener long-term care community, also brought the Little Sister she mentors to bowl with the team, dubbed the Lanark Heights Thunder Bowlts, on March 8. The team raised $1,390 to support the charity.

In keeping with the superhero theme for this year’s fundraiser, team members wore superhero masks and outfits while bowling.

Sherri says she enjoyed having her Little Sister, who is 12, bowl with the Lanark Heights team.

“She has come along with us every year, so it was nice to have her bowl with us again,” Sherri says.

Sherri adds there has been increased interest from her co-workers in joining the event since Lanark Heights started participating in Bowl for Kids Sake in 2016.

Each of the Lanark Heights 11 team members had to raise at least $100 in pledges to participate in the event. A team from Lanark Village, the Steeves & Rozema seniors living community adjacent to Lanark Heights, also participated in the fundraiser on March 6 (see the S&R Today story from March 18).

Big Brothers Big Sisters is an international mentoring program that pairs children with adults to share life experiences.

As part of the organization’s mission of “creating communities that are good for life,” Steeves & Rozema long-term care and seniors living communities participate in many fundraising activities for local charitable organizations each year.
