Rosewood Village residents rallied support for the HUB, a community collaborative that provides supports to young people in Sarnia, just before Christmas by donating more than $1,000 worth of stocking stuffers, gift cards and other items.
The HUB is a community collaborative of more than 30 partners that provides supports, including meals, recreational activities and health services, to at-risk young people aged 16 to 24.
Bev James, the Sarnia senior living community’s fun co-ordinator, pitched the idea to residents before the holidays, and everyone was quick to add items to the large box in the front lobby, as well as cash donations that Bev used to buy an array of gifts.
“Residents went above and beyond,” Bev tells S&R Today. “I was blown away with the items that we got.”
Residents and others donated about $400 alone for small items that could be used as stocking stuffers, as well as Tim Hortons gift cards, a brand-new Nintendo Wii and nearly $600 in gift cards that were used to help fund the Christmas dinner the HUB hosts each year for the youths and young adults accessing its services.
“My aim was to give them stocking stuffers and also their Christmas dinner; every year the social workers (at the HUB) get together and the kids pick the menu and they make a Christmas dinner for them,” Bev explains.
Bev says she hopes to continue helping the HUB on an ongoing basis with acts of kindness, as the HUB is a valuable asset to the community, she says.
“I think it’s a great organization,” Bev says. “If you can help kids when they’re a little bit younger, they’re more likely to stand a chance when they get older.”
