Afton Park Place hosted its first ever Halloween door-decorating contest. The event was a month-long competition that brought residents and staff members together and culminated on Oct. 31 with a costume parade, evening of entertainment and young trick-or-treaters.

At the beginning of October, the Afton Park Place life enrichment department put out a challenge to team members in all departments to decorate doors at the Sarnia long-term care community as part of a contest.

Life enrichment manager Stacy Petrie says she was impressed by the strong effort team members put forth, adding everyone “went above and beyond.” Many residents helped staff members decorate their doors, Stacy notes.

“The home was filled with Halloween,” the life enrichment manager tells S&R Today.

On Oct. 31, residents attended a slide show of all the decorated doors, and they were asked to vote for their favourite design by round of applause. Residents also voted on the best home area decoration.

The day also included a costume parade, and prizes were handed out for best costume designs.

In the evening, Afton Park Place engaged the local community by opening its doors to people from the neighbourhood to bring their children in for trick-or-treating.

“We ended up having 45 kids show up,” Stacy says, adding there was also a husband-and-wife musical team that came in to provide entertainment, dressed in costumes, of course.

“The kids stayed and enjoyed the entertainment; it was a huge night for us,” she adds.
