Westmount Gardens residents are pictured here gathered around guitarist Graham Gould during a recent campfire activity.

The Westmount Gardens team hosted two evening campfire sessions during summer, and the events proved to be the perfect venues for engaging the London, Ont. long-term care community’s residents.

The most recent event, held a few weeks back, was organized by the life enrichment team and saw 32 residents gather outside around the portable campfire pit to listen to guitar music played by entertainer Graham Gould.

Some of the attending residents, team members and volunteers were feeling especially lively and got up to dance. And, of course, no campfire would be complete without marshmallows to toast.

Westmount Gardens nursing clerical co-ordinator Stacy Danielson tells S&R Today that the campfires have created a strong sense of community among residents, team members and volunteers while giving everyone the opportunity to enjoy a different type of activity.

“The response from the residents was that it was a great time of enjoying music, fellowship and the fresh evening air,” Stacy says.

“Team members and volunteers very much enjoyed interacting with the residents, seeing them thrive on the interactions that the event provided.”

The campfire events were so successful this summer that Westmount Gardens plans to continue the program on a monthly basis next spring and summer.
