Landmark Village raised $630 for the Parkinson Society of Southwestern Ontario during the Sarnia seniors living community’s 2018 WALK-IT for Parkinson’s event on Sept. 5.

This is the second year Landmark Village has hosted the event, and once again both residents and staff members participated, says Landmark Village fun co-ordinator Brent Hart.

The only hitch to the plan was that it was too warm outside to walk the planned route on the day of the event, so instead everyone walked around the Great Hall, activity room and dining area, Brent notes.

Eighteen residents participated in the walk, and about 40 to 50 residents came down to participate in the raffle draw and to take in the musical performance from pianist Steve Lane after the event, Brent says.

The walk began at 2 p.m. Carolyn Young of the Parkinson Society of Southwestern Ontario was on hand to walk with residents and speak to them about how their donations are used and about the variety of programs the society offers.

“It was a great afternoon that raised money through a 50-50 draw, a prize raffle and donations,” Brent explains.

Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system. The condition affects an estimated 55,000 Canadians aged 18 and older, according to Statistics Canada.

It’s also a condition that hits home at Landmark Village, Brent says.

“Parkinson’s affects many of the residents here, which is why we chose to host an event like this and will continue to do so year after year,” he says.
