Trillium Villa personal support worker (PSW) Darlene Abbey recently attended a workshop in Sweden hosted by Arjo, the manufacturer of bath tubs, lifts and slings used at the Sarnia long-term care community.
Darlene was in Malmo June 23-29 with six other staff members from Canadian long-term care homes to provide the company with insight about their products to help Arjo in its quest for quality improvement.
“They wanted to get information from us about how it would make our job easier with new tubs that they’re making and new lifts they’re making – and they want to find ways to make it easier for us to do our jobs,” Darlene tells S&R Today.
“The new designs that they are coming up with will make it easier for us to do our jobs. They wanted to get information from us about how we liked the new products they were making.”
Earlier this year Arjo put a call out to long-term care communities using their products. The company was looking for front-line staff members to attend the workshop. Darlene was chosen for the trip after she was nominated by Trillium Villa administrator Kim Van Dam.
“They wanted somebody who has lots of experience bathing residents; someone who worked well with residents with dementia because their objective in design is not only aimed at (long-term care home staff members) but also at the residents as well,” Kim says.
Darlene, who has 24 years of experience as a PSW, was perfect for the job, Kim says.
The workshop was largely focused on enhancing quality bathing experiences for long-term care residents. Darlene says it was also interesting to learn about Arjo’s products and how they are designed and manufactured.
“You learn the way they build these products and how much thought and design goes into them to make people more comfortable,” she says.
