On Friday evenings, on her own time, building manager Christine Warren hosts a movie night for the residents of Waterloo Heights. This is just one example of how Christine is always going the extra mile for people living at the seniors-living apartment block.
“It’s amazing that she gives her Friday evenings for our residents, and she really puts a lot of time into picking movies that she thinks everybody will like and trying to provide the best quality --- the best visual, the best sound – and creating excitement in the air on Friday nights,” says fun co-ordinator Maia Hillen.
Maia notes that having Christine organize a movie night every Friday has been an important staple in providing a high-quality living experience for Waterloo Heights’ residents.
And hosting Friday-night movies is one of the reasons Christine received this year’s Above and Beyond Award at the recent 17th annual S&R Awards celebration.
The Above and Beyond Award recognizes people who perform at a level that exceeds their job expectations; people who are doing things to improve the lives of residents in the homes where they work or improving the lives of their fellow team members.
Christine was nominated for the award by office manager Anna Marie Crawford, who says Christine also works hard to keep Waterloo Heights looking its best.
Anna Marie says Christine has put a lot of time into maintaining Waterloo Heights’ flower beds and has even created a flower-bed map to identify plants. She has hosted a weekly garden club with residents. She also installed and maintained bird feeders so residents can watch birds during the winter months.
Maia says weather is never a deterrent for Christine when it comes to maintaining Waterloo Heights’ garden and flower beds, and for ensuring that birds keep coming by to grab a snack.
“She goes out every day – rain, shine, snow or sleet – to make sure the birds are fed, and she has even done research into what kind of birds are coming there, and she has set up a bird-watching station for the residents,” Maia says.
Anna Marie adds that she also nominated Christine for the Above and Beyond Award for both her resident focus and the fact she’s a favourite among residents.
“I feel Christine is worthy of the Above and Beyond Award because she does all of this on her own time and the residents absolutely love her,” Anna Marie says.
Steeves & Rozema’s 2018 awards celebration was held April 19 in Sarnia. Awards were given out in four categories: Above and Beyond, Community Service, Quality Improvement and Volunteer Recognition.
