Showing support for communities is ‘our culture’ at Heron Terrace and S&R, says administrator

On April 12, residents, staff members and volunteers at Heron Terrace wore hockey jerseys as a show of support for those impacted by the recent bus crash that claimed the lives of Humboldt Broncos hockey team players, coaches and employees.

Amy Sworik, the Windsor long-term care community’s administrator, says staff members wanted to do something to show their support for the people affected by the tragedy. Amy says the idea came about after Heron Terrace team members learned about the social media campaign, #JerseysforHumboldt, which encouraged Canadians to wear hockey jerseys to work and school on April 12.

Amy adds that many staff members learned their children planned to go to school that day wearing hockey jerseys as a tribute to the Broncos, so they wanted to do something to honour the team as well.

“Our staff here, our team, is always engaged in supporting others, not just internally, but externally as well,” Amy tells S&R Today. “There are sincere, heartfelt thoughts going out (to those affected by the tragedy). It was something we felt compelled to do.”

While some residents had family members who brought jerseys for them to wear, staff members gave jerseys for those who did not have one.

On April 6, a bus carrying members of the Humboldt Broncos along with coaches and team staff collided with a tractor-trailer in rural Saskatchewan. The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League team had been travelling to a game at the time of the crash.

The crash killed 16 people and injured 13 others. Since then, there has been an outpour of support for those affected by the incident from people across Canada and around the world.

Amy notes that community support is part of the narrative at both Heron Terrace and the Steeves & Rozema Group, so everyone wanting to wear jerseys to show camaraderie with the Humboldt Broncos and the town of Humboldt, Sask., came naturally.

“That’s just our culture,” Amy says.
